Plunging for a Good Cause

On a very chilly Saturday in January, 150 brave souls ran into the Atlantic Ocean to support LADACIN Network and the J. Michael Hartnett Memorial. The event raised over $90,000 for the Agency! This year was the 10th Annual Plunge, founded and coordinated by Joseph Russell, Jr., the nephew of J. Michael Hartnett and cousin of Liz Hartnett, a client of LADACIN Network. Over the course of the last 10 years, a total of $823,000 has been raised to support LADACIN’s educational, therapeutic, social, residential and support services.

Held at Manasquan Beach, the event was hosted by Leggett’s Sand Bar and Restaurant. Participants, some in costumes, were led to the beach by a US Marine Corps Color Guard and the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh of Belmar, who played the bagpipes as the crowd made their trek to the water’s edge. 95.9 WRAT morning DJ Gotts emceed the event, as well as making the plunge himself. Due to choppy water, the Coast Guard warned of going out past waist level, but most participants felt that was sufficient!

Post-plunge activities resumed at Leggett’s, where a buffet lunch was provided. There was also a 50/50 raffle and a contest for the best costumes, which was won by a group of Elvis impersonators. Second place went to the Minnesota Vikings and third place went to Marge and Homer Simpson.

Many thanks to Leggett’s, Joe Russell, and all the volunteers, plungers and supporters who came out to make the 10th Annual LADACIN Plunge a success!
